PROVISORIUM

A makeshift is more than just a temporary solution. It is the point where purpose and improvisation collide, a temporary state often associated with a sense of fleetingness and ease. It is an object whose use is limited from the start, yet, paradoxically, it often becomes a permanent companion. The seemingly transient nature of a makeshift can transform into something undefined and enduring, a constant evolution that slowly settles into our daily lives.

In a world dominated by perfection and permanence, the makeshift is often overlooked or underestimated. Yet, in its imperfection lies a unique aesthetic, a certain poetry that deserves to be discovered. So, I tucked my sweatpants into my socks, grabbed my camera, and set off. It was an attempt to give the fleeting moment of the makeshift a tangible form.

My photographic search led me on daily walks through Berlin–Neukölln and the surrounding streets, where traces of the makeshift appear in the architecture, in the temporary arrangements of urban life, and in the people who inhabit these spaces. It is in the overlooked corners and edges of the city, the details that often go unnoticed, where a particular beauty unfolds in their impermanence.

In those quiet moments, when the makeshift is no longer just a transition but becomes part of an ongoing transformation, a new perspective on the city and its inhabitants emerges. Here, in the makeshift, life reveals itself in its raw, unpolished form—a constant in the flow of change. And it is these moments, which often go unnoticed in the everyday, that I captured with my camera, to preserve them, if only for a brief moment, in their poetry and significance.
